Banned From Argo

Yes: banned again. This time, most unusually, not for arguing too hard that same-sex marriage is a civil right, or that safe legal abortion is an essential choice. I got drawn into a conversation on Livejournal about race, cultural appropriation, and racism, Patrick Nielsen Hayden jumped in with both feet and Teresa Nielsen Hayden jumped after him with a flamethrower.

There’s a quick recap here. More information here. A timeline of events here.

And a rather brilliant post called Laurels Wither, or, It Just Doesn’t Work That Way by Bellatrys.

(Teresa’s response to my posting these links in a comment at her journal: “Jesurgislac, my only remaining point of curiosity about you is why I didn’t ban you earlier.”

I’m impressed: I normally only get banned for making comments with information the owner of the blog/journal does not wish people to read, at blogs which either (a) are rigidly anti-choice or (b) rigidly against same-sex couples having the right to marriage.)

If the following makes no sense to you, don’t worry about it; I fitted in as many injokes as I could. Potentially NSFW due to one use of a word that, while technically no more obscene than “dick”, is usually regarded as far more offensive.

Banned From TNH

When we pulled into TNH to talk of race and such
The fans set out investigating every little touch
We had high expectations of her hospitality
But found too late she isn’t geared for nithlings such as we

And we’re banned from TNH every sock
Banned from TNH just for having a little mock
We spent some tough discussion there for just three days or four
But TNH doesn’t want us anymore

Our lady of communications won a ship-wide bet
By getting into the journal’s main communications net
Now every time someone calls up on a TNH telescreen
The arse is there but the pants they wear are nowhere to be seen

And we’re banned from TNH every cunt
Banned from TNH just for having a common front
We spent some tough discussion there for just three days or four
But TNH doesn’t want us anymore

Our Willow’s tastes are simple but her methods are complex
Bear found her open letter and sent flames by fedex
The racist trolls were on the way — we had no second chance
We beamed her up in the nick of time and left Bear feeling pants

And we’re banned from TNH every goth
Banned from TNH, each draggletailed loudmouth
We spent a tough discussion there for just three days or four
But TNH doesn’t want us anymore

Our Spiralsheep would yield to none in putting down the word
She outweirded Teresa and mass deletion spurred
Bellatrys didn’t win but she ranted twice as much
And now Teresa hates them because they’ve got the common touch

And we’re banned from TNH every rookie
Banned from TNH just for handing out a cookie
We spent a tough discussion there for just three days or four
But TNH doesn’t want us anymore

A racist lawyer commented and Teresa didn’t care
He stomped into the journals to announce that he was there
Half our crew was busy there and invited him to fight
But the lawin’ troll only looked at us and got back out of sight

And we’re banned from TNH every one
Banned from TNH just for having a little fun
We spent a tough discussion there for just three days or four
But TNH doesn’t want us anymore

Our crew is fandom’s finest and our record is our pride
And when we play we tend to leave a trail a mile wide
We’re sorry ’bout the wreckage and the riots and the fuss
At least we’re sure that TNH won’t be quick forgetting us!

May Leslie Fish forgive me. Or at least kill me quick. This is of course based on “Banned From Argo”, mixter-matched with the help of a rhyming dictionary.

  1. Oh. OH. This is what happened. I saw the references and the fallout with no freakin’ idea what set everyone off.

  2. Yeah.

    Of the bad, there are now a whole whack of good people who are Not Talking To Each Other (I’m a little shellshocked still at how badly Teresa Nielsen Hayden went down in flames);

Of the good, there are a serious lot of very interesting essays on systemic racism and what that means for well-meaning white people and people of color, all linked to from here.

  3. Cool!

“Do not anger a filker, for your name is funny, and scans to ‘Greensleeves’” ;-)

  4. I don’t think I’ve ever been inspired to filk before. And I still can’t sing. Then again, I don’t think this filk could be sung.

  5. This is awesome!

I don’t think the last line has ever been so appropriate.

(Here from your “and I’m a terrible filker” link in mariallegra’s post, which I got to from metafandom. Love the LOLcats as well!)
